Data Collection

Data collection is done continuously for the purpose of research and our upper secondary school work. Thus, we collect data in the game as well as the website in the form of the questionnaire. Furthermore, all data collected is sent at the end of the questionnaire, at this stage the raw data is viewable above the submit button.

What data do we collect?

The data is broken down into two categories:

  • Questionnaire data
  • Game data

Questionnaire data is data that is collected when you fill out the questionnaire. This includes evaluations of each test, any improvements you offer, and any feedback you give.

Game data is data collected when you play the game. This includes things such as time and score that you give each test after it has been completed.

Following are the exact data-points we collect:

  form: {
    evaluation_A: '',
    evaluation_B: '',
    improvements: '',
    normalPlay: '',
    preferredSystem: 'traditional',
    interactive: 'yes',
    interesting: 'yes',
    inOtherGames: 'yes',
    region: '',
    age: '',
    privacy: false,
  },
  game: {
    order: 'A-B',
    totalPlayTime: 0,
    testTime_A: 0,
    testTime_B: 0,
    purchaseTime_A: 0,
    purchaseTime_B: 0,
    emersionScore_A: 0,
    emersionScore_B: 0,
    generalScore_A: 0,
    generalScore_B: 0,
  },
  meta: {
    timestamp: serverTimestamp(),
  },

How do we collect it?

The data is first collected in the game itself. This is done by either collecting time data from Unity processes such as the time component or asking you to preform an action that triggers a measurement. When the game is completed, it will open a browser window with the questionnaire. When opening the questionnaire, the game appends the data to the URL. The URL is then parsed and stored in the browser's local storage. After the questionnaire is submitted, the data is sent to the server.

How long do we keep it?

The data is kept indefinitely for the purpose of research. However, if requested, it can be removed under the condition that a valid UID is given. For more information on how to remove data, visit the GDPR page.

How do we use it?

The data is used for the purpose of research. I.e we use the data to conduct and write our research paper that is part of our upper secondary school work.

We hope that at the end of this research period, we may publicly publish anonymized data for research purposes as well as a thank you to the participants.

Sharing of Data

We do not share your data with third parties except in the limited amount that is required by the Firebase Data Processing and Security Terms.

However, at the end of our writing period we may publish parts of the data that we have collected publicly for the purpose of research. We may also publish the data in a form that is accessible to the public on this website. If we do this, only anonymized data will be published, no personal information will be published.

If necessary, we may share your data with law enforcement authorities or other authorities in the event of a legal investigation.

Data Storage

The data is stored on Firebase/Google provided servers which are located in the European Union. The data is stored in a secure manner and is not accessible to third parties. The data is stored in a form that may in the future be accessible to the public on this website. Firebase is a backend-as-a-service that provides a secure, scalable, and reliable database and hosting plan. Due to this, Firebase's terms of service and Firebase Data Processing and Security Terms apply.

GDPR

We offer a way to fully delete all data that is stored about you from our servers. Note that this does not include any data stored locally on your computer as we do not have any access to those files. Only the data that you have voluntarily sent to the servers; i.e the questionnaire response, can be deleted via the provided method.

To delete the data follow the steps on the GDPR page.
