What is a "Gymnasiearbete"?

In order for a student to obtain a high school diploma, he or she must have completed an approved upper secondary school work (Gymnasiearbete). With the upper secondary school work, the student connects their studies on the programme and shows that they are prepared for work or studies.

// Swedish National Agency for Education

In Sweden 🇸🇪, to be allowed to graduate from a gymnasium, also known as “Ta Studenten”, a student needs to conduct and write a research paper on an approved topic. The topic is usually something relating to what course the student is studying, and in our case, that is software development. After the approval of the topic, the testing begins. The data collected from the test(s) will be compiled and analyzed in the form of a report. The report is later reviewed and approved by the course leader as well as other groups in the class. After that is all done, we can graduate and go from being students to being unemployed!

The Idea

Our idea is based on how different interaction systems can effect how a user experiences a virtual world, namely in the form of immersion. Our idea can be boiled down to testing how the user experiences traditional user interfaces compared to a more "realistic" system. Or as we put it in our project plan*:

The project will compare how a traditional graphical user interface is experienced by the player compared to a more interactive, non-graphical, system in a VR game. In addition, how the efficiency, i.e the speed of a purchase, is affected by the more interactive system. With the purpose to provide information on how developers can increase "immersion" and improve the experience of the player.

Data Collection

We do collect data, as that is the purpose of the gymnasiearbete. We use the data as the basis for our report that will be published in Q1 or Q2 of 2022. The data comes from the game and the questionnaire that we ask you to fill out. The data is stored on our servers and can be deleted if you contact us. You can learn more about our data collection in our privacy policy. The following data is collected and analyzed:

  • Headset and controller positional and action data. This data is used to "playback" the instance without recording the VR-view.
  • Total playtime, as well as the time taken in each testing scene.
  • Data relating to the questions asked in the questionnaire that is presented after the test. Example being: what you thought of the test, any improvements that could be made, your general location such as "North America" or "Western Europe".
